2nd grade-ish Curriculum plan for 2013

Last year we were virtual schooling so we had the year's lesson plans laid out for us. You can read more about our journey and curriculum here.

I had only planned our lessons until the end of the year so we could make any required changes in our curriculum. Here is what I have so far...I am still

Language arts/spelling

  • Copy work from St. Annes Helper. Miss K can review her Catechism and do copy work at the same time! We downloaded some samples last week and they were great. Miss K proudly showed Daddy her beautiful writing.

  • Continuing with Learning Language arts through literature (3rd grade)

  • MCP phonics B
Math

The Math in Focus curriculum is sold in two parts, we had just purchased the first semester books just in case it wasn't a good fit. The lesson themselves are really good for Miss K. We just recently changed up the order we did the chapters. I felt Miss K needed more confidence in addition and subtraction before we could move onto multiplication. I got a bit sneaky. We did two lessons of math each day. One from the math in focus measurement unit (chapters ) and then later in the day some from Mammoth math addition and subtraction 2b. Usually miss K also does 20 mins on IXL...so that's kind of three math lessons. She has yet to notice because she doesn't consider measuring stuff and computer work 'Math'. Having said that, the IXl novelty is starting to wear off now that the virtual prizes are not coming as readily now as they do in the beginning.

History/Geography

We have a few more days left of Advent and then we return to our Galloping the globe.

Saving $$ on 2013 Curriculum

I usually stock up on manipulatives and educational games during the after Christmas sales. They get put up in the closet -or in a box if we are about to move. My usual criteria is that it needs to be well discounted, something we can use to enhance our curriculum and portable. I have listed the items I found and purchased in the sales. The Prices listed are correct at the time of this post.

Amazon

Uncle Milton Bug catcher and magnified observation dome. $4. Miss K really loves the the one she received for Christmas. It is well made and easy to use.

Learning resources Head full of numbers game. $7. I really liked the idea of this game. Looks like number boggle. Shake up the number dice and then write down all the possible number equations from the numbers before time runs out.

Learning resources Cross section Frog model $7. See our post here

Learning Resources Big Cat Math game $5. For K and up.

Melissa and doug 100 PC solar system puzzle. $9. I had been really wanting this one for awhile!

Wilton Build a cake puzzle set $5. These are way more expensive in the craft shops. They do like a good project and the answer to my limited cake decorating skills.

The Great word race board game. $10. It looks like a fun way to practice spelling!

American Girl McKenna 397 Piece Movie party crafts $4. Miss K isn't really into the dolls (Daddy is grateful after learning the were $100+) but she Loooves the crafts.

The Mailbox end of year $1-5 sale
I was soooo excited with the $3 theme kit clearance at the The Mailbox. Usually I print or draw our lap book or tot books. These theme kits have colorful laminated pieces! The ink alone would probably cost more to print these. They usually retail for around $20.
They are available in Pre k, K and Grade 1. I got a selection in Pre k for Mini Piwi and a few Grade 1 for Miss K for revision. Look at everything you get...

Amanda Bennet 12 days of Christmas
We are watching closely each day to grab some good deals on Unit studies. They are also have an I-Pad Mini giveaway.
Miss K really wants to do unit on Pets because we are about to start a study about Community service. She has chosen to do a report on Pet shelters.

St Annes Helper is having a sale on their copywork books. The samples we tried were really good so we have ordered some for Miss K. Use discount code: catholicmom

Miss K's week of Drs, frogs and Advent

Miss K was busy for most of the week - trying to get well again. It seemed a lot like the pre thanksgiving virus she had. This time though we didn't let it take hold and took her off to the Dr on Day 2. The decongestant worked well and let her breath better and gave her tummy a rest -don't ask!
It did make her a bit foggy so she just read a lot and drew.

Not too many action shots this week of Miss K but here is a bit of what she got up to

She is nearing the end of her AB Christmas unit Study. This week we also added the mini books from the 1+1+1=1  Christmas symbols lapbook, into her Advent notebook. Here she is researching meanings.
She also made a photo frame craft she received for Mini Piwi's birthday (we practice a family tradition of giving small gifts to siblings too).  It involved flocking so it was a bit tricky but she did a great job.

This week we also looked at Frog anatomy as part of an amphibian lesson we missed in Science. Miss K did the closest thing that we will ever get to a dissection and looked at this cool model we found

After labeling the parts in her notebook, she had lots of questions about frog vs. human anatomy so we pulled out our books and compared them side by side.

Miss K also had an awesome week on IXL.com completing nearly 2 hours and earning 14 medals. At-ta-way-to-go!

Big Kid stuff: 2nd grade

Miss K pointed out that we haven't done many posts on her work lately. I tried to point out that she does appear in the Tot school and Truth in the tinsel posts more often than not. I got 'the look'. So here is a what second grade looks like for Miss K -this week.

Every day we do Monkey Math. This is basically a Monkey decorated folder full of fun worksheets that review that skills Miss K has learnt or needs extra practice in. The worksheets are either from teacher file box or abc teach or if I can't find what we need, I make my own. We also use IXL.com as a way to track comprehension and progress.

Several times a day Miss K wants to take a 'Perry break' and give our fuzzy boy some attention. He is usually asleep nearby.

This week we finished up the length section of Metric Measuring. Math in Focus is still working for Miss K. Here she is at the start of the section measuring curves with string. By the end of this week she was using what she had learnt to solve real world distance, length and height world problems.

Most of Miss K's reading and language is based around Advent this month. The Amanda Bennet unit study we are using has been great for her as after we go through the day's readings together, Miss K can use the links in the PDF to research the answers to the questions. To this we add lots of books and our spelling and vocab lists.

Rather than printing out the note booking pages included in the unit study we are using a spiral notebook and Miss K is decorating the pages herself.

Yesterday was the feast of St Nicholas. Catholic icing had some great ideas for this celebration. They also directed us to the St Nicholas center which is full of information and has a kids section full of games and crafts. Miss K played a bunch of games and quizzes and then used what she had learnt to write a biography of St Nicholas. While we were waiting for dinner to cook, we all sat done to make our own little St Nicks by giving Chocolate Crispie Kringles a makeover.

We also wrote our letters to Santa....Miss K used an anchor chart I had made a while ago to remind her what a friendly letter looks like.

The highlight of the week for the Miss K was definately putting up the Christmas tree and unpacking the Christmas books we store with our decorations.

Update:

I showed Miss K the post and she wanted me to say that she did a lot of other things this week -I just didn't take pictures of it. She also reminded me that she also made a lapbook for Mini Piwi and that she has been working on planning Mini Piwi's birthday. I stand corrected.
