Learning About Careers in The Theatre

It was tough to decide which direction to take this month with the Poppins Book Nook theme: What will I be when I grow up? It was exciting to look through books about careers in our community.

The girls both had different types of ideas and so I decided not to cram it all into one project. The post today will focus on career in dance and theatre. Miss K (8) began taking Musical theatre classes, and she is 'hooked'.  They are studying 'Broadway Musicals by the decade, from the 30's to the 90s' to go along with this we are working on a unit study based on this amazing book I found on Amazon.

How Does the Show Go On: An Introduction to the Theatre  It gives kids a great view into how a modern Broadway show is produced. Its split cover opens up like a red curtain and begins at the front of the house and then takes you to the stage and behind. At each point, there are detailed explanations of the many roles of the people working and acting in the theatre. The book is extremely interactive, and there are playbills and tickets to take out and look at. There are also parts of scripts and directors production sketches and of course a lot of photos from many well known Disney Broadway Musicals.


We went through it quickly exploring all the pieces but now have started at the beginning again to study each role and part of the production in a unit study. I am making notebook and lapbook type components as we go through this book. With luck, I can soon share them on the website for you to use with your theatre fans and budding actors and actresses!

Pirate themed Summer Fun for Kids for the Poppins Book Nook

This month we are sharing a great collection of books by one of our favorite New Zealand authors and the Pirate activities that have been keeping us cool this month. Margaret Mahy wrote over a 100 hundred children's books and pirates were clearly one of her favorite characters!

The Man Whose Mother Was a Pirate is a about a shy man with an office job takes two weeks leave  to help his Mother relive her youth -as a Pirate!
It is a bright and fun book full of characters that try to put him off setting sail. You'll have to check this one out to see if he finds his sea legs!

The Great Piratical Rumbustification is a treat because it is also illustrated by Quentin Blake who also illustrated many of Roald Dahl's books. Pirate turned Babysitter, Orpheus Clinker, manages to turn his latest sitting job into an all out pirate party. Be sure to read this one out loud because it is one of the best examples of Ms. Mahy's fun alliteration that kids love.









The Horrendous Hullabaloo switches the pirate theme up to show that not all pirates behave badly! Peregrine Pirate has left his aunt and parrot at home for the last time. He never takes them to his parties so Polly and his Aunt decide to through their own Parrot Pirate Party at homes. Oh no!

Our pirate fun this month continued with two cool projects: Frozen Gold Doubloons treats and Pirate Bath Treasure.

This a very simple treat the kids were able to make themselves. We mixed together:

• 4 Oz Container of Vanilla flavored Greek Yogurt
• 1 Mashed ripe banana
• 1 Tablespoon of Peanut or Almond Butter

Spoon the mixture into a ice cube tray and freeze until solid (approx 2-4 hrs). We love the Fred and Friends Have an Ice Day Icetray.

The bath time treasures I made for my little pirates can be used as body and hair wash!

Here's what you need!

1 Packet of Gelatin (2 1/2 teaspoons)

1/2 cup hot water

1/2 c kids’ shampoo and body wash (we used Sauve Kids Wash)

1/2 teaspoon cooking oil

Mixing bowl and spoon

Square plastic container to use as a mold

Plastic knife

Directions

1. Prepare the mold by greasing it with the vegetable oil

2. Pour the hot water into the mixing bowl and add the gelatin.

3. Whip the mixture quickly until the gelatin has dissolved.

4. Add the shampoo and mix until completely combined.

5. Pour the mixture into a container and place in the refrigerator for 4-5 hours.

6. When the jelly is set, turn out onto a paper napkin and cut into a 1 inch cubes

7. Store the cubes in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.

About the Author: Grayson Smith

Grayson Smith was born in Alberta, but attended a boarding school in Germany for 11 years. After high school, he attended SFU, where he obtained a degree in Criminology and met his beautiful wife, Linda. Throughout university, Grayson wrote stories when he should have been paying attention in class. After completing his degree, he became a police officer, and still enjoys that job thoroughly. As of 2012, Grayson gets to re-envision the world through the eyes of his baby son, Josiah. Writing is a wonderful way for Grayson to express the silliness and vagary that simmers beneath his well-practiced outer layer of respectability and professionalism.    

About the Illustrator: Alana Kyle

Alana Kyle was born and raised in the Lower Mainland. As a small child, she was sweet, quiet, and frequently lost inside her own head. Ever since she was young, she was motivated by her love of artistic creativity and attention to detail, and remains captivated by storybooks and imagination. Alana attended and graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, and also obtained a three-year diploma of Illustration and Design from Capilano University. She works as an illustrator and graphic designer, and lives in Coquitlam.

About the Author: Teddy O'Malley

Jourden Cleghorn, who writes and illustrates children’s books under the pen name Teddy O' Malley, was born in in Saint Louis, Missouri. She has traveled all over the United States and enjoys learning about new things and other cultures. She dreams of visiting a foreign country. She has enjoyed studying Spanish, German, and now Italian as well. Jourden paired her language skills with pictures of puppies to write Tell Me How You Say Good Night, a bedtime story. And a childhood friendship with a biracial girl named Hope influenced Jourden to make the Destiny and Faith characters biracial in her series about twins. Many of her books include a thread about friendship and acceptance of others. Jourden previously worked part time as a nurse assistant helping the disabled and elderly.

She suffered severe injuries as a result of this accident including a cracked sternum, punctured lung, broken arm, and broken foot. Exploring the Great Outdoors with Poppins Book Nook

It isn't hard to convince the kids to explore outside at this time of year. They have also been noticing some big differences between the landscapes of Texas and the more humid Lousianna. Their favorite changes are all the dragonflies and the tree lined parks and streets!

In an effort to identify all the different trees we went to the library. Our favorite identification guide was  Crinkleroot's Guide to Knowing the Trees by Jim Arnosky.

The friendly character of Crinkle foot was created in the 70s by Mr Arnosky.

His guide to the trees is part tall tale and part nature guide. With each whimsical illustration we are led through a forest. Crinkle root points out the structure of tree and how the environment can effect a trees shape.

There is also a lot of information about how to use the leaves and seeds on a tree to identify it.

For the last few weeks we have been taking pictures and collecting leaves and seeds. It turned into a fun project the kids have identified over 20 different trees and added the labeled pictures into their nature journal.
