Edible Hat Art Inspired by Dr Suess' 500 hats of Bartholomew Cubbins

This hat design craft was inspired by 500 hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. We were fortunate enough to be able to review a copy for iGameMom. Remember the frosting sugar cone trees that replaced gingerbread houses this past Christmas?. We tweaked the idea and made hats. A stack of sugar cones really reminded us of the 'stack' of hats Batholomew had hiding under his hat.

Instead of frosting we made ‘edible paint’ from powdered sugar, water and food coloring.

The piwi's painted up a storm, let them dry and then enjoyed them for dessert.

Comparing City vs the Forest habitiat -The Lorax

Urban vs. suburban
Mini Piwi built two very different types of ‘houses’ to extend our (approx 20th) viewing of the Lorax movie. We love the book but the movie really appeals to our wacky sense of humor around here! It is not unusual for the kids to be singing the songs from the movie at full volume. Daddy Piwi hasn't seen it as often so he thinks we are all a bit nutty lol!
At the park she made a little one from leaves, acorns and twigs.

Later at home she made was a big colorful plastic one from her mega blocks.  We talked about who could live in the houses. She decided lizards and squirrels would like her acorn house and mickey mouse would like her mega block house.

Why Lizards? It was a nice sunny day at the park and the lil lizards were sun bathing on the tree!

Lenten Family tree project

I found a beautiful poem based on centuries old story that traces the wood of Jesus's cross back to its creation in the garden of Eden. We read 'The Easter tree' by Fr. Victor Hoagland  and then continued the 'Tree of life' theme by creating a family tree display.

We did have big piece of art paper but they seem to have disappeared.  Instead Miss K glued lots of recycled art paper together to make something large enough for all our branches.

We colored in the tree and made a leaf for each member of our extended family. The Piwi's drew pictures of each person or things they like.

Before gluing on the leaves we labelled the roots of the tree God to remind us that God the creator  is the root of all our lives. The trunk we labelled Jesus to remind us that he is what anchors the branches and leaves of our family tree.
