Seeds of Change Organic kids growing kit review

I have tried (and enjoyed) the food products from seeds of change. The other day I was at our local Sprouts and was surprised to see a display of DIY gardening kits. It turns out they were in the organic seed business before they started making yummy pasta sauces and chocolate. Oops, my bad! To be fair though after living in apartments and hotels for the last six years, we haven't really been in the market for gardening products. There were several different varieties but I settled on the more Kid friendly lettuce and carrot kit.

Miss K followed the instructions and planted them herself. The soil was actual soil rather than dried granules like Miracle grow or freeze dried tablets I have also seen. I am hoping this soil will be more successful than the Miracle grow kit we are also 'growing' at the moment.

Recent phonics and L/A activities

To review some different spellings for the 'j' sound and the 'a' sound we made these posters. They were fun to make and have been a great way to remind Miss K of the less common spellings for these sounds. We will definately be making a few more of these...

Miss K wasn't too sure about the concept of Homophones and so she asked if we could make a poster for this too...an awesome idea and I thought she did a great job!

We also made book marks for the cat and the hat which we read for Dr Seuss' Bday. This is Mini Piwi's one! Cute!

Seed germination experiment

Miss K has set up an experiment to investigate whether temperature effect the speed of germination.
She made two 'germination bags'. These were damp paper towels in zip lock bags with four different seed types in them. The bags had been stapled so the seeds had little 'shelves' to sit on. I think the photo explains it better...


Seeds in warm area: Day 3
1. white bean 2. Cucumber 3. Tomato 4. Grass

 Miss K placed one bag in a cool place (a bedroom by an a/c vent) and one in a warm place (the kitchen).
Each day she has recorded any growth. Her Hypothesis is that the seeds in the warmer area will grow faster.

Mini piwi did it her way and shoved multiple very paper towels and a good handful of beans in her bag and they are doing very well!
Once again I have been reminded that sometimes you get a better result when you color outside the lines!

Plants: Our green world

This week we begin our Plant study. I am adding to the curriculum with materials and activities from other sources.
Ongoing activities:

• Mini vege greenhouse,
• Kids organic gardening kit
• Hairy harry grass seed 'pets'
• Carrot top sprouting
• Experiment: Does germination occur faster in warm or cool conditions
• Demonstration of how a plant stem sucks up water
